Wellness Tip: Clear Your Mental Tabs

We often worry about having too much to do. But research suggests that one of the biggest drivers of stress is actually carrying unfinished tasks in our minds.

Think of your brain like an internet browser. Every unfinished task is another open tab:

  • Follow up that patient
  • Complete that evaluation
  • Return that text
  • Schedule that appointment
  • Study for boards
  • Buy groceries
  • Plan that vacation

Eventually, too many open tabs slow the whole system down. The goal isn’t to close every tab. The goal is to stop using your brain as the storage device.

🔹 Do a “Brain Dump”

Spend 5 minutes writing down:

  • Every task
  • Every responsibility
  • Every loose end
  • Every reminder

Don’t organize it yet. Just get it out of your head. Many people experience an immediate reduction in stress simply from externalizing these tasks.

🔹 Identify Your “Next Step”

For each major item, ask: What is the next physical action?

Not: “Finish research project”    Instead: “Email statistician”

Not: “Get healthier”  Instead: “Walk for 10 minutes after work tomorrow”

Clarity reduces anxiety.

🔹 Use the Two-Minute Rule

If a task takes less than two minutes: Do it immediately.

  • Send the email
  • Sign the form
  • Schedule the appointment
  • Return the text

Small completions create momentum.

🔹 Create One Parking Lot

Choose one trusted location: Train yourself to capture tasks there instead of mentally rehearsing them.

  • Outlook Tasks
  • OneNote
  • Notes app
  • Paper notebook
  • Todoist

🔹 Quick Challenge for This Week

Take 10 minutes.

  1. Do a complete brain dump.
  2. Pick your top three priorities.
  3. Complete one task that takes less than two minutes.
  4. Schedule one action step for tomorrow.

You do not have to carry every responsibility in your head to be a good physician, resident, fellow, or colleague.

Sometimes wellness isn’t adding another habit. Sometimes it’s simply creating enough mental space to breathe.
